Course Assignments & Activities
Assignments will be added to the table below as they are introduced in class. Any useful links, handouts, or additional information will be provided in the form of a hyperlink :)
Download & Hand-In Instructions:
To download a document from the class website, simply click on it (download, or, hyperlinks, will appear in blue). Always choose "Save File" and make sure that the box that preserves the document's current formatting is checked off. If the file automatically opens, close it. Now, navigate to your Downloads folder, CUT the document from this folder, and paste it into the appropriate folder within your Student Drive. Title each document you download/hand in as follows: “loginname_assignmenttitle” (ex. hambri_AnticipationGuide). Open the document from your folder, then use the document to complete your assignment. Once you're finished, hand it in by COPYing the document and pasting it (don't just drag and drop - it can cause major issues with your work) into Ms. Hammond's Hand In folder.

You've been recruited: Mrs. Bailey needs a group of skilled individuals such as yourselves to make English-Tagalog information signs for some of the locations around our school. Why? To help newcomers who speak English as a second language navigate their surroundings, and to reflect the multi-cultural population within our school. For this assignment you will be applying the skills you've learned in Illustrator, so far, to the creation of an 8.5 x 11" poster that contains 1) the English version of your word, 2) the Tagalog version of your word, and 3) an image that represents your word. Now that you've managed to develop some serious bitmap-editing skills in Photoshop, we are going to shift gears and develop our skills when it comes to editing vector images in Illustrator! First, I will give you a guided tour of the interface, and tools available to you through Illustrator. Then, I'll leave you in the hands of Adobe tutorialist, Paul Trani, where he will teach you the basics of creating and combining both basic and compound shapes to create your very own Personal Crest! Your Personal Crest may be similar to Trani's, or completely unique! However - it cannot be EXACTLY the same. Put your own spin on it, and choose words that reflect your identity! |

I don't know about you, but the first thing I think of when I think "Desktop Publishing" is a magazine cover. Though you can make print documents in a variety of programs, we will be designing ours using something familiar - Photoshop! In this assignment you will put your old Photoshop skills, your understanding of the design principles (especially CRAP) and some new Photoshop skills to the test to design a magazine cover for ANY magazine (real or fictional) of your choosing. Download the Planning & Doing handouts to the right to begin :) |
1) FUNctional Fonts & Colours Program: Microsoft Word Hand In: "loginname_FUNctionalFOnts" .doc Due Date: A - Fri, Feb. 10 B - Tues, Feb 14 |
Desktop Publishing is all about making balanced, eye-catching and visually-appealing graphics and layouts for print. To make great print documents, you first need to understand great design. While every print designer brings a different style to the table, and sometimes thinking outside the box when it comes to design can be the most effective strategy, there are some fundamental design principles that are universally appealing to most audiences. As an introduction to Desktop Publishing, you will learn about the effect two key elements of design, typography (font) and colour, have on an audience, and how you, as a designer, can manipulate these elements to create cohesive print documents.
